Spend Your Money on Time not Things

The concept of spending your time working to earn money that you spend on freeing up your time is an odd one. But it actually makes perfect sense.⠀

There was a wonderful article on the BBC website yesterday about how people who spend their money on freeing up their time, rather than on material goods, are happier and have a greater sense of fulfilment. And you can apply it in all sorts of ways.

Do you ‘buy’ a cleaner to free up the hours of every week you spend on housework and go spend that time with the kids? Do you ‘buy’ an accountant to do your business’ financial admin and instead spend your time doing the work you enjoy?⠀

When I set up independently two and a half years ago, this was partly my rationale. Instead of the standard nine to five I can time-shift my work and spend more time with my family or cooking a poached egg and smashed avocado brunch for my wife and I. I’m putting time first and I’ve not been happier in my career.

It’s no secret that we’re all time-poor. So if there’s something you hate doing and you could you pay somebody else to do it for you, science says it’s a pretty good use of money for your mental well-being!

What do you think you should spend your money on to free up your time?
